See Fully Magnified Image (Full Detail)

Pen and ink and watercolour within the artist's original black-lined border. Signed and inscribed by the artist. Overall size in off white fully conservation grade mount and back: 35cms x 42.2cms. Images size: 177mm x 250mm including title. Charles Hayes (1772-1826) was the son of William Hayes (1735-1802), also an ornithological artist and he learnt to paint under the supervision of his father. An album of 144 watercolours by Charles Hayes, entitled Portraits of British Birds was sold at Christie's London, 25 October 1955 lot 17 (Ł46,000). This watercolour appears to have been sold (with another) in 1998 at Christie's and then, on its own, in 2004 in Bonhams sale of Important Natural History Books and Watercolours, Part Two.
