See Fully Magnified Image (Full Detail)

Long title: Confederated Coalition;- or - The Giants storming Heaven;with, the Gods alarmed for their everlasting abodes. 'They never complain'd of fatigue, but like Giants refreshed, were ready to enter immediately upon the attack!' 'Not to destroy! but root them out of Heaven.'Copper engraving with later hand colouring. Overall size in hinged, fully conservation grade mount and backing with decorative v groove 49.2cms x 61.5cms. Image size 355mm x 468mm. This caricature mocks the ambitious history paintings of the time by showing a heroic struggle between the coalition which overthrew the Addington Administration and which led to the re-appointment of Pitt. In this case, however, the heroes are not gods but politicians risible in their nakedness. Addington aloft in the clouds defending the Treasury, aims a syringe at the blunderbuss wielded by a stout and hirsute Fox. (Addington's father was a doctor and , like John Major's father's occupation, this influenced the way the caricaturists depicted him). Pitt is to be seen ready to throw a parcel of 'Knockdown arguments' at Addington. The day before the publication of this print, Pitt was asked to form a new administration
