Steel engraving with original hand colouring. Engraved by Stockley. Image size : 219mm x 273mm. vg. James Wyld (the Elder) 1790-1836 ; James Wyld (the Younger) 1812-87. For well over half a century the Wylds, father and son, carried on a highly successful map publishing business in London. Wyld the Elder took over William Faden's business, and his stock, in 1823 and from then on he and later, his son published a large number of atlases and maps, including re-issues of Faden's maps - all highly regarded. In turn they both held the position of Geographer Royal and Wyld the Elder was a founder member of the Royal Geographical Society.
