SUPRESSED PLATE.Copper engraving with later hand colouring. Overall size in sand mount : 47.1cms.x 38.7cms.Image size : 340mm.x 245mm (including title).Dated May 25th 1796. Lady Jersey, a lady of some fifty years , was the mistress of the Prince of Wales (subsequently George IV) from the early 1790's. She encouraged him to marry in order to snub Mrs Fitzherbert who he had married in secret. Wellington said,'Lady Jersey made the marriage'. Here the Earl of Jersy is obsequiously lighting the way into the marital chamber where his bed-capped wife peeps out expectantly from the bed hangings. The Prince is large and contemptuous and is in marked contrast to the skinny and insignificant figure of the Earl who touches his nightcap in subservience. The Prince of Wales feathers are above the door and on the open bedchamber door is a map of the British islands with a tear through the island of Jersey. This print and Fashionable Jockeyship turned the Prince against the press.
