Characteristic green decorative border and pastel colouring. Index to 107 important places and to the Wards in bottom left corner; Plan of the Principal Floor of the Capitol top right. Browning to margins and some foxing in the Potomac River, around the Capitol and around the title bottom right but none is offensive or obtrusive else early map of the capital in good condition.
Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. were a publishing company based in Philadelphia. They were part of the burgeoning atlas and map publishing in the early to mid-nineteenth century. They published many famous works, including Tanner’s New Universal Atlas. Their maps are notable for the decorative borders and fine, vivid original hand colouring.
