LIZARS, William Home (1788-1859).painter, engraver of portraits, figures and bank-notes, in Edinburgh. Son of printer and engraver Daniel Lizars (1760-1812). On the death of his father W.H. Lizars was compelled to give up his painting and take over the family printing business in which he had worked sporadically with his father who taught him how to engrave .His work covered a wide variety of genres as well as maps: landscapes for such publications as Views in Lancashire after N.G. Phillips (1822-24) and Feldborg's Denmark Delineated (1824); anatomical plates for his brother John Lizars, and natural history for J.J. Audubon's The Birds of America, 1827-30.
