Uncommon thus.. Copper engraving with original ou tline hand colouring. Overall size: 53.1cms x 43.2cms; image size: 418mm x 352mm. Old ink number top right of sheet. Central crease as published, very slightly prominent;splits top and bottom centrefold (to neatline) repaired with archival conservation tape, not visible from front and hardly from back; browning to sheet edge else very good condition. Very decorative title cartouche; three characteristic textual vignettes including: The Bahama Islands were taken from the English by th efrench and Spaiards in 1703. In 1717 Captain Rogers after having Plunder'd most of these Islands re took New Providence which has ever since belonged to the English & St Salvador or Cat Island was the first Land discovered of all America Anno 1492 & K Charles II by Charter dated June 30th 1665 granted to the Earl of Clarendon D of Albermarle etc the Province of Carolina extending Southward to the 20th Degree of N Latitude so that Fort S Augustin as well as Georgia falls within these limits.. Stunning map Emanuel Bowen (1714-1767) was mapmaker to King George II and Louis XV (France), and his most distinguished work is the System of Geography from which this map came. His output was prolific and he produced several English county atlases, in some of which he was assisted by his son Thomas. Despite this commercial success ill-health and impecuniosity dogged both father and son, the latter dying in Clerkenwell Workhouse.
