Author: Creighton, R

Publisher: Lewis's Atlas Comprising the Counties of Ireland.

Date published: 1837

Steel engraving by John Dower with original outline hand colouring. Overall size in off white fully conservation grade mount and backing: 39.1 cms x 35.6cms. Image size: 239mm x 196 (including imprint) mm. Compass rose; scale of Irish miles; scale of English miles. Very good condition. The original publisher, Samuel Lewis the elder, carried on business successively in Aldersgate Street, Hatton Garden, and Finsbury Place South, London, under the name S. Lewis & Co. He is most likely the same Samuel Lewis who died at 19 Compton Terrace, Islington, on 28th February, 1865. His atlas comprising the counties of Ireland and a general map of the Kingdom was published first in 1837 and is highly collected both for its clarity and also for the information it imparts of the Irish counties some ten years before the Great Famine decimated the country and caused a mass exodus, particularly to the United States.
