Copper engraving with original hand colouring. Overall sheet size: 60.8cms x 50.1cms; image size: 486mm x 375. This map of the province of Groningen and the Ems estuary was originally drawn by Barthold Wicheringe. It shows Gronningen, Netherlands on the left and Emden, Germany on the right. The map shows the Dollert (Dollart), a large basin in the estuary, with a note about the 1277 flooding of the villages when it formed. There is much detail within the map, roads, dikes, fortified cities are shown. Two highly decorative cartouches adorn the map: the title cartouche depicts a classical warrior and a depiction of Justice holding the scales, and the scale of miles is surmounted by a couple holding agricultural implements together with oxen, a sheep and horse. Browning to the huge margins from previous mounting and framing else very good condition.
