Etching by Charles William Cain (1893- 1962). Overall hinged in off white hinged mount and back of conservation grade with decorative v groove : 31.3 cms x 37.2 cms. Etching signed in pen below image right; number 88 out of 90 below image left. 'The Return' was written on the back of the original frame. Some faint overall browning from previous poor framing and line of mountburn under mount else image else strong image in very good condition. Possibly Iraq, certainly in the East. Charles Cain was an important English painter, watercolourist and drypoint engraver who first became known for his art of World War One. Shortly after the end of the war the Imperial War Museum purchased thirty of his drawings. He created his first published engraving in 1921. Mainly self-taught, he exhibited his art at both the Royal Academy and the Paris Salon. During the 1920's and 1930's, Charles W. Cain produced seventy-four original etchings and engravings, all published in London by Greatorex. The large majority of his prints deal with scenes in Iraq, Persia, Indian and Burma and he developed a strong reputation as a major Orientalist printmaker. Today, a large collection of Charles Cain's drypoints will be found at the British Museum, London.
