Unusually this map has a Sudbury and Humble imprint and a blank verso. Long title: Surrey Described and Divided into Hundreds. Engraved by Jodocus Hondius. Copper engraving with attractive later but not recent hand colouring. Overall size : 53.5cms x 41.5cms. Image size : 507mm x 381mm. Compass rose with adjacent scale of miles, title in cartouche. Embellished with elevations of the Tudor royal palaces at Richmond and Nonsuch top right and left. Centre fold as published. Two archival strengthenings on verso of centrefold of 7.7cms x 9.8cms and six marginal nicks repaired on verso (margin's edge), none noticeable from the front else very good condition. Until his late thirties, John Speed was a tailor by trade but his passion for history and map-making led him to gain a patron in Sir Fulke Greville, the poet and statesman, who found him a post in the customs and helped subsidize his map-making, giving him "full liberty to express the inclination of my mind"".
