Folding map. 1st edition. A stunning, large-scale thematic map covering England and Wales. It is brightly coloured to illustrate 48 different geological formations. Adjacent Scotland, Ireland and France are also coloured. Scale 1 inch=10miles (1:633,600). The map provides detail of the roads, canals, and railways that made up the transportation system. In addition, there are four profile maps along the sides and bottom showing geologic formations for specific locales. Dissected and laid on original linen, the map folds into green cloth boards, with gilt text on the front cover. Included with the map is a 28 pp. explanatory note. Published by John Bartholomew & Son. Advert to the new Geological map of Scotland on the front endpaper with lithographic view below of the Edinburgh Geographical Institute. Overall sheet size: 87.3cms x 104.3cms. Blue boards bumped at corners and top and bottom of spine else very good condition. Sir Archibald Geikie was a Scottish geologist, born in Edinburgh on 28th December 1835. He was educated at the University of Edinburgh. He was Professor of Geology at Edinburgh, from 1871-1882. In 1867, he became Director of the Geological Survey of Scotland until 1901. Geikie became Director General of the Geological Survey of Great Britain in 1882, and remained Director until his retirement in 1901. See Geological Society
