Long title: Dorcestriae Comitatus vulgo Dorsett ubi olim durotriges infederunt (Dorset). Copper engraving with later hand colouring.. Overall size : 41.4cms x 33.2cms ; Plate size : 382mm x 273mm. Title in decorative cartouche surmounted by royal arms. Compass rose, scale of distance surmounted by dividers, sea monster and sailing ship. Watermarked paper. Centre fold as published. Latin text on verso. Archival strengthenings to right and top margin on verso - see magnified image; some greyness in top left blank and title cartouche as is often the case with these maps and took place during the printing process so is a C17th flaw
These maps are the first county maps where each county is delineated on a separate sheet. They were prepared by William Kip and William Hole for William Camden’s famous work ,’Britannia’ and were based on the maps of Saxton and Norden.
