Lithograph with original hand colouring.  Overall sheet size: 68.6cms x 42.9 cms.  Double page map of the entire state of New York. It covers the entire state from Lake Erie to the Connecticut Vermont border and from Canada to New York City. Steamboat and railway routes throughout the state are noted. Five insets highlight Niagara Falls, Rochester, the vital New York City - Albany corridor, New York City's environs, and the vicinity of Albany. To the left and right of the map proper statistical data from the 1850 Census is arranged in tabular format. Political and topographical features. "Miscellaneous Statistics"  includes white/black population, imports/exports, crop yields, schools, colleges, volumes in libraries etc.  Some browning  - below the inset of Rochester top middle and in the inset of the Falls of Niagara, in the title block and small part in right hand Map of the Hudson Riverfrom New York to (Albany). Two small remants of tape on verso tips and top left tip missing else good condition and nicer than this sounds.  A very desirable  
map of nineteenth century New York.  

 

Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. were a publishing company based in Philadelphia. They were part of the burgeoning atlas and map publishing in the early to mid-nineteenth century. They published many famous works, including Tanner’s New Universal Atlas.  Their maps are notable for the decorative borders and fine, vivid original hand colouring.
