Copper engraving with full wash original hand colouring, the different colours indicating the different boundaries.  Overall sheet size: 31.8cms x 38.1cms; image size: 298mm x 338mm. "Gavin & son sculpt."  Inset :’A Correct Chart of the Rivers Sierra Leone and Sherbro’.  The source of the Nile marked as south of  Lake Tzana in Abysinia (Ethiopia).  this map is some eleven years after James Bruce’s expedition to discover the source of the Blue Nile.  The tribal names are marked and, as is to be expected, the coast is more detailed than the interior.  Some marks to margin - see magnified image- and a grey mark to the right of the oval cartouche else very good condition.

Thomas Brown 1764-1820 was an Edinburgh based bookseller, publisher, printseller, stationer and originally an engraver.  His maps are uncommon.
