Published 1854 in Philadelphia.  Lithograph with original full wash hand colouring. Overall sheet size: 34.5cms x 42.6cms; image size: 314mm x 388mm.  Inset of Delta of the Ganges bottom right and top  details of the provinces that are ‘British Possessions/States under British Protection/British Territory and also which are French/Portuguese and Danish.  Two years later than this map,  in 1857, the Sepoys of the East India Company would revolt resulting in the First War of Indian Independence which would ultimately lead to the dissolution of the East India Company and direct rule by the British Crown.  The British Raj (British Rule)  lasted until 1947.  Some browning and spotting to margins and on verso else very good condition with one minute edge tear.


Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. were a publishing company based in Philadelphia. They were part of the burgeoning atlas and map publishing in the early to mid-nineteenth century. They published many famous works, including Tanner’s New Universal Atlas.  Their maps are notable for the decorative borders and fine, vivid original hand colouring.
