Published 1855 in Pennsylvania, dated 1850 .  Lithograph with original full wash hand colouring. Overall sheet size: 32.3cms x 39.2cms; image size: 290mm x 358mm.   Characteristic green decorative border and pastel colouring. Key to Steam Boat Routes top left; Explanation key bottomleft (symbols for canals, railroads plank roads, capital and towns etc )  To the right is a profile of the Wabash and Erie canal.  
Deta Darkening to margins and odd fox spot in margins and very faint one in Kentucky and below the I in the title else attractive , detailed map in very good condition.

Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. were a publishing company based in Philadelphia. They were part of the burgeoning atlas and map publishing in the early to mid-nineteenth century. They published many famous works, including Tanner’s New Universal Atlas.  Their maps are notable for the decorative borders and fine, vivid original hand colouring.
