Overall sheet size: 34.5cms x 42.8 cms; image size: 326mm x 402mm.  Detailed map of Palestine and Lebanon. Environs of Jerusalem inset top left; List of Turkish Provinces (36) in left blank .  In Explanation key bottom right details symbols for Cities of Reguge, Levitical Cities, Royal Cities of the Israelites, Ruins of Ancient Towns, Modern Towns and Villagers, Monasteries and Convents; Explanation of Arabic appellatives which occur in the Map and Remarks on the Dead Sea and the River Jordan. One fox spot at Amalekites in bottom left of map.   Some fox spots in left blank, browning to margins else very good detailed map in very good condition.

Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. were a publishing company based in Philadelphia. They were part of the burgeoning atlas and map publishing in the early to mid-nineteenth century. They published many famous works, including Tanner’s New Universal Atlas.  Their maps are notable for the decorative borders and fine, vivid original hand colouring.
