Copper engraving.  Overall sheet size: 37.7cms x 24.8cms ; image size: 339mm x 226mm.   Title in lower right corner. In lower centre margin: "London. Published by Alexr. Hogg at the Kings Arms No. 16 Paternoster Row." In lower right corner; "T. Bowen Sculpt". At top left are three profiles: "View of Van Diemen's Land over Fluted Cape, when South Cape bears NNE 1/2 E distant 7 miles", "View of the Land over Fluted Cape when Penguin Hland bears NW b W 1 1/2 mile distant", "View of Van Diemen's Land when the Mewstone bears N 1/2 E distant 5 miles". Named features include: Cape Frederick Henry, Adventure Bay, Fluted Cape, Tasmans Head, Storm Bay, and S.W. Cape. Adventure Bay (on Bruny island) is shown as part of mainland Tasmania, with Tasman Peninsula identified as "Maria's Isles".  Border  showes degrees.  Tracks of Cook's ship shown by minute dotted line. Good condition apart from augmentation of the bottom margin with old paper , two tiny holes repaired below neatline and three in the enlarged border, not visible from the front. Cook was the first European to observe the native Aboriginals.

This is a copy of Cook's 1777 map, engraved by T. Bowen and published by A Hogg in Anderson’s folio collection of Voyages Round the World, which included Cook's voyages.
Alexander Hogg was a prolific London publisher and mapmaker, flourishing between 1778 and 1805.
