Copper engraving after Wyld engraved by Hewitt with original hand colouring. Overall size hinged into off white fully conservation grade mount and back with decorative v groove : 44.6 cms x 39.6cms; image size: 291mm x 226mm. Vignette bottom left of Ft Niagra from the British Light House. Very good condition apart from some very faint marks to bottom margin and one faint grey mark in the ‘I’ of ‘Icy sea’. The border between the United States and Spanish held Florida is coloured the same as Cuba etc. the land above California is labelled New Albion The land either side of Hudsons Bay is labelled ‘New Britain’ and above the Arctic is labelled,’Icy Sea’. Many Indian tribes are named. Fascinating snapshop of a very small United States.
Nathaniel Rogers Hewitt (fl.1804-1841) was a map draughtsman, engraver, printer and map colourist. (See British Map Engravers Worms and Baynton-Williams. James Wyld (1790-1836) Mapseller, cartopgrapher, publisher, engraver, lithographer, globemaker and surveyor. He took over the Faden business in 1823, subequently becoming Geographer to the King. The business was continued by his son James Wyld 2 after he died, it said by overwork, in 1836.
