Copper engraving with original hand colouring.  Variant 3 in John Booth’s bibliography referring to the editions of Humphrey Lhuyd’s map of Wales - the first published individual map of the Principality.  Humphrey Lhuyd was an M.P. and personal physician to Lord Arundel ; tragically he died at the age of 41 , five years before his map was published. Overall size : 54.4cms x 42.8cms.  Engraved size: 493mm x 350mm.  Title in cartouche and a quarter compass rose in the lower left hand corner with rhumb lines.  The border has degrees of latitude and longitude .  FRENCH text verso.  Engraved by Pieter Van den Keere .  The cartouche is different to the Ortelius version and a quarter compass rose in the left hand corner with rhumb lines is also new.  The decorative border is replaced here with degrees of latitude and longitude which John Booth speculates may indicate Mercator’s influence.  Overall toning  and few pinpricks of light can be seen near Chepstow if held up to the light;  one repaired nick right margin else good condition.
