Copper engraving, uncoloured as issued.  Overall size : 81.8cms x 32.2cms.  Image size including text and title: 779mm x 300mm. Good clear engraving of this most elusive panorama. Centrefold as issued. Archival repair to centrefold split , barely visible from front ; repaired tear inbetween C and I in City in top margin else good condition. Key below identifies the 28 major points of interest and the text amplifies this.  No plate number.
The medieval bridge spans the River Severn to the north. Boats are grouped by the quay and a ‘trow’ lowers its sail to pass beneath the bridge. Inside the old walled city, the cathedral dominates the south end next to the gardens of the Old Palace and the smoking kilns of Dr.Walls porcelain manufactory. Beyond rise the hills that were later to be developed as Regency and Victorian suburbs. The motte of Worcester Castle can be seen on the extreme right of the image. The motte and bailey castle was built by Urse d’Abitot, Sheriff of Worcester in 1069. During the 13thC. it ceased to be a significant military centre, though the buildings were used as a prison until 1814 when a new gaol was built in Castle Street. The motte was steadily dismantled between 1823 and 1846
