Published 1855 in Pennsylvania, dated 1850 .  Lithograph with original full wash hand colouring. Overall sheet size: 42.7cms x 34.5cms; image size: 397mm x 318mm.   Characteristic green decorative border and pastel colouring. Explanation key below title showing symbols for Rail Roads, Canals, Capitals, Important Towns, common do.  Inset of Nova Scotia New Brunswick etc with key to the sixteen counties therin.  Covers the area from the mouth of the River Lawrence, Quebec, Three Rivers, Montreal and, uncoloured, down to New York.  Browning to margins, two spots bottom left, one rust mark to left of title else striking map with schiaparelli pink colouring and vivid, blues and greens.  Very striking map in good condition.

Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. were a publishing company based in Philadelphia. They were part of the burgeoning atlas and map publishing in the early to mid-nineteenth century. They published many famous works, including Tanner’s New Universal Atlas.  Their maps are notable for the decorative borders and fine, vivid original hand colouring.
