Published 1855 in Pennsylvania, dated 1850 .  Lithograph with original full wash hand colouring. Overall sheet size: 42.7cms x 34.4cms; image size: 408mm x 333mm.   Characteristic green decorative border and pastel colouring.  Chart of the principal mountains and rivers of the World, with a key on either side identifying the mountains and rivers shown, including a number of active volcanoes. In the centre are thumbnail depictions of Rome, London, Dublin, St. Helena, Niagra Falls, the Pyramids, amongst others.  Some speckling in blank right area but not obtrusive; browning to margins and extreme bottom right tip missing; one spot left margin else very good condition.

Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. were a publishing company based in Philadelphia. They were part of the burgeoning atlas and map publishing in the early to mid-nineteenth century. They published many famous works, including Tanner’s New Universal Atlas.  Their maps are notable for the decorative borders and fine, vivid original hand colouring.
