 Published 1855 in Pennsylvania, dated 1850 .  Lithograph with original full wash hand colouring. Overall sheet size: 32.6cms x 39.1cms; image size: 296mm x 362mm including text.   Characteristic green decorative border and pastel colouring. Inset of Tallahasse  and Pensacola with plantations beyond mid left of map;  Harbour of St Augustine soundings mid bottom.  Many early forts are shown in the south, along with  early roads  and swamps. Water Routes are in tables at top and bottom of map and an Explanation key is in box on bottom of map. One fox spot above title in blank area, some faint speckling in sea, please see magnified image , margins somewhat browned, one edge tear right margin else very good condition.                                                                                                                                                   

Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. were a publishing company based in Philadelphia. They were part of the burgeoning atlas and map publishing in the early to mid-nineteenth century. They published many famous works, including Tanner’s New Universal Atlas.  Their maps are notable for the decorative borders and fine, vivid original hand colouring.
