Published 1855 in Pennsylvania, dated 1850 .  Lithograph with original full wash hand colouring. Overall sheet size: 40.9cms x 32.9cms; image size: 372mm x 296mm.   Characteristic green decorative border and pastel colouring. Steam Boat Routes in a box at top of map and Population of the State of Maryland according to the Census of 1850  and also at  different periods is at  bottom left.  Browning to margin edges and odd spot in margins  ; very faint spotting in blank to right of title and one spot above Richmond C.H. else very good condition.

Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. were a publishing company based in Philadelphia. They were part of the burgeoning atlas and map publishing in the early to mid-nineteenth century. They published many famous works, including Tanner’s New Universal Atlas.  Their maps are notable for the decorative borders and fine, vivid original hand colouring.
