Long title: A New Map of Virginia with its Canals, Roads & Distances  from place to place along the stage and steam boat routes.  Published 1855 in Pennsylvania, dated 1850 .  Lithograph with original full wash hand colouring. Overall sheet size: 38.8cms x 33cms; image size: 372mm x 296mm.   Characteristic green decorative border and pastel colouring.  This map was produced prior to the separation of Virginia and West Virginia in 1863.  Explanation key top left  shows that rail roads are in orange and canals in dark blue and the delineation of distances from town to town are explained.  At the bottom of the map is a list of Steamboat Routes whilst at the top of the map is a profile of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal,  a crucial waterway which linked the Midwest  with Washington , some 184.5-miles (296.9 km) . Some browning to margins and extreme bottom right tip missing; odd spot to margins and one in canal box and, very faint one above Fredericktown  else detailed and attractive map in very good condition.

Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. were a publishing company based in Philadelphia. They were part of the burgeoning atlas and map publishing in the early to mid-nineteenth century. They published many famous works, including Tanner’s New Universal Atlas.  Their maps are notable for the decorative borders and fine, vivid original hand colouring.
