Miniature map. Engraved by Philippe Galle from Abraham Ortelius’ large map of 1574. Italian edition from Epitome theatri Orteliani.   Hand coloured copper engraving with original hand colouring. Overall sheet size: 15.3mm x 10.4cms; image size: 108mm x 86mm. Mount size: 26.3cms x 24.8cms.  Hinged into off white fully conservation grade mount and backing with decorative v groove.  The world on an ovoid projection. When Ptolemy of Alexandria published his Geographia circa 150AD he produced the hypothetical southern continent of Terra Australis nondum cognita, or the Unknown South Land. It is still very visible here nearly a century and a half later. A smaller supercontinent is shown in the north. Stunning map in very good condition indeed.
