Lithograph with original full wash hand colouring; hand coloured by county. Insets left and right at top of Environs of Nashville and Environs of Knoxville. Steam Boat Routes and distances bottom right. Overall sheet size: 42.5cms x 39.2cms; image size: 392mm x 290mm. Characteristic green decorative border and pastel colouring. Railroads marked in orange. Browning to borders ; small brown mark to right of Monticello and two spots at right of title else very good condition indeed.
Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. were a publishing company based in Philadelphia. They were part of the burgeoning atlas and map publishing in the early to mid-nineteenth century. They published many famous works, including Tanner’s New Universal Atlas. Their maps are notable for the decorative borders and fine, vivid original hand colouring.
