Copper engraving with later hand colouring. Overall size in off white conservation grade mount and back with decorative v groove: 41.8cms x 37.2cms; image size: 262mm x 212mm. Marginal tear left margin repaired, just into map and one other tiny repair to hole at fold intersection else very good condition.
One of the earliest printed maps of the British Colonies. Early map of the British & French Colonies in North America, extending from Long Island and the Hudson River to the St. Lawrence, Newfoundland and parts of Labrador, centred on Nova Scotia. The map identifies the New York and New England Colonies (New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts Bay), along with New Found Land, Nova Scotia or Acadia, York County and a number of forts, towns, Indian tribes, etc. Long Island is depicted as an island. The striking cartouche is decorated with a seascape, trees and the mast of a large sailing ship.
